Recommendations for Installation of

Timber is a 'natural' material and as such is subject to dimensional movement with change in seasonal conditions. Whilst designAclad is kiln dried to minimise this movement, the following points should be observed to ensure a satisfactory installation:
- A SARKING or VAPOUR BARRIER, should be used directly behind timber cladding to direct water, that may have penetrated the cladding, back to the outside.
Sarking must be weather proof, but vapour permeable (not perforated type). Frencham Cypress recommends using Thermach Cover-Up.
- designAclad is supplied Kiln Dried (ie: between 10% to 15%)
- To allow for seasonal variations & changes in equilibrium moisture content, an Expansion Joint should be provided.
Refer to: Recommended Expansion Joint for designAclad.
- All ends and joins (other than end-matched) in boards should be pre-drilled prior to nailing and should be located behind a framing member.
Note: Two fixings are required at board ends.
- End-matched boards need not be joined over a framing member, however leave at least two rows of boards between end-joints in similar locations.
- To ensure maximum weather resistance, boards orientated in a horizontal or diagonal manner should be installed with tongue located upwards.
- Where end-matched boards are used in a vertical application, ensure that the tongue end of the board is located upwards.
- designAclad should be installed so tongue and groove are fully together.
- Where cladding is to be finished with a surface coating, it is recommended that each board be fully coated, (front, back and sides) including docked and end-matched ends. A second coat can be applied after installation.
- designAclad can be left to weather naturally to a silver-grey, however, it is strongly recommended that a quality coating be applied, to increase the service life of the System.
For more information, refer to: Finishes.
- designAclad is designed to be face nailed or screwed at support centres ranging from 400mm to 600mm, depending on wind zone.
- Fixings should be chosen for their corrosion resistance, to suit the environment in which they are to be used.
For fixing requirements, refer to: Recommendations for Fixing of designAclad.
